Zombie Zombie

Zombie Zombie - Halloween Main Theme

Over the last few months Delach has made a habit outta starting off all of his sets with the creeping, hypnotic beats of Zombie Zombie (especially from the wonderfully sci-fi synth-riddled/horror-flick-influenced full length, A Land for Renegades), so it's only appropriate that we now give credit where credit is due. With the new, appropriately titled Zombie Zombie Plays John Carpenter, the experimental Parisian duo - with their minimalist, ever-building beats and the ominous swirlings of electronic bits and pieces - tackle a handful of theme songs from John Carpenter movie scores (Halloween, The Thing, etc...), and in doing so, manages to flawlessly recreate the sense of dread and psychological despair that the director originally established in his classic films.

Diplo Presents: Dubstep

Borgore - Sunset (ft. Diplo)
Diplo - U Don't Like Me (ft. Lil Jon) (Datsik Remix)

Diplo's imprint, Mad Decent, is about to start droppin' a new series of compilations entitled, Blow Your Head. His first incarnation features some brand new, unreleased, and overlooked speaker-blowers that are gonna leave your system in dire need of a reconing.

Blow Your Head - Diplo Presents: Dubstep will be released on November 2nd, courtesy of Mad Decent

The Suzan

The Suzan - Home

If this hipster Voltron shit wasn't done so well this album and band would piss me off beyond belief and send my already sky-rocketing blood pressure through the friggin' roof. However, Peter Bjorn & John produced and first Fool's Gold rock signing, The Suzan, are really kinda badass! The early word is that this Tokyo based, all girl foursome absolutely crushed at the Yeezy-attended Fool's Gold CMJ Party, which can only mean HYPE! HYPE! HYPE! about this infectious garage-rock ensemble.

Golden Week For The Poco Poco Beat is available via Fool's Gold Records

Tera Melos

Tera Melos - The Skin Surf
Tera Melos - Westham United

Here's the deal: Tera Melos might be a bit difficult for us to describe, especially with the relentless bombardment of the technical fretboard maneuvers, erratic pummeling of drums, and absolutely break-neck start-and-stop tempo changes - mostly bordering on the delightfully chaotic, albeit momentarily confusing... So, to be fair, none of us are really sure how to approach putting together a write-up that might accurately envelop exactly what's happening throughout Patagonian Rats. All we know is that this one makes us sweat just by listening to it (in a good way, of course), so yeah - we like it a lot.

* For the locals: Tera Melos will be performing on Sunday, November 7th at Crowbar in Ybor City

Patagonian Rats is available via Sargent House

The Octopus Project

The Octopus Project - Fuguefat
The Octopus Project - Glass Jungle

Experimental, eclectronic (see what I did there?) four-piece The Octopus Project deliver their avant-garde, multi-media live performance project straight to the eagerly awaiting masses with the upcoming Hexadecagon. For those of you who might not major in math, hexadecagon (I admit it - I had to look up the definition) is the geometrical name of a sixteen-sided object, and it just might be the perfect title to describe this album's multi-faceted, auditory explorations and innovative techniques, and ever-changing algorithmic awesomeness.

Hexadecagon will be released on October 26th, via Peek-A-Boo Records

Rustie - Neko

The new EP from beat-maker Rustie, entitled Sunburst, is an eclectic 5-track quickie awash with video game glitches, breakneck hip hop beats, and enough majestic, anthemic twists and turns to stave off even the most restless of listeners. For sure, this one doesn't stand still long enough, even to find one's bearings, let alone getting anywhere near trying to foresee whatever possible direction it might be heading in next.

Syl Johnson

Syl Johnson - Different Strokes
Syl Johnson - Concrete Reservation
Syl Johnson - Straight Love No Chaser
Syl Johnson - Fox Hunting On The Weekend

My man Syl Johnson has been at it for over 50 years, been on the same label as James Brown and Al Green, and at this point in his life is seemingly batty as all get-out (see HERE). Having been sampled by TONS of hip hop acts in recent years, Syl's funk/blues sound has been all over Public Enemy, Wu Tang Clan, Michael Jackson, J. Dilla, RJD2, and a whole slew of other artists' records. His steep catalogue, unhinged personality, and legendary track record has led to the upcoming massive release of his entire back catalog of music.

The Syl Johnson: Complete Mythology Box Set is 4 CDs and 6 LPs and is now available, digitally. It will be available in stores on November 9th, via Numero Group

The Gaslamp Killer

The Gaslamp Killer - Fun Over 100

Los Angeles producer, the Gaslamp Killer, also known as the Motherfucking Gaslamp Killer (an alternate moniker in which we wholeheartedly prefer), just released the ominously-titled Death Gate EP, and just as its name might suggest, this five song disc provides yet another (Read what we had to say about the quite excellent My Troubled Mind EP HERE) lil' peek into the bleak and oftentimes very odd world of its creator. Dusty analog sounds and loops abound, and the result is a swanky, sample-induced menagerie of off-kilter, spine-tingling weirdness.

Liquid Jesus MixTape 01:04

LIQUID JESUS - MixTape 01:04

Most of this month's MixTape pretty much came directly outta lil' bits and pieces of Delach's setlist from the School of Seven Bells/Active Child show a few nights ago, and most of it was recorded live and then cobbled together at the last minute… So… please, please, please disregard any hiccups or irregularities (Pssst… we were drinking) you might run across. Full tracklist is available after the jump. Enjoy.

Caribou Vibration Ensemble

Caribou Vibration Ensemble - Sandy

Look, we're just gonna go ahead and cater to some of the local peeps to get 'em all juiced up for the Caribou show on Sunday night at Crowbar in Ybor City. Cool? But posting just plain old Caribou would be kinda expected, I guess, and by now I'm sure just about everyone's heard the beautiful and breathtaking Swim, so fuck it - here's Caribou Vibration Ensemble (Dan Snaith's 15-piece live collaboration project - featuring Four Tet, Koushik, members of Born Ruffians, and Marshall Allen, plus more - that exclusively performed at the 2009 All Tomorrow's Parties festival in NYC) instead. Excited yet? See you at the show, lil' buddies.

Caribou Vibration Ensemble is available ONLY at live events, courtesy of Caribou

Caribou: Sunday Night!

We know some folks who are downright hot and bothered and on the verge of dying with anticipation for this one, but we're not really gonna judge 'cause we're pretty excited about it as well. Wowzers! If you're not out and about for this one, then please don't bother showing your face around town for a long, long time, ok?

School of Seven Bells & Active Child: Tonight!

Just a reminder that RIG and Delach (plus RIG's lovely wife, Mollie Sue) will be playing music at the School of Seven Bells/Active Child show, tonight at Crowbar in Ybor City, and as always, we're encouraging local peeps to come on out and join us. In case you might need a lil' bit of motivation, here's what we've had to say about School of Seven Bells and Active Child (HERE and HERE, respectively) in the past. See you tonight!

Busdriver - Computer Cooties
Busdriver - Encyclopedia Wand
Busdriver - Unibrow (ft. Free The Robots)

Busdriver has a well-warranted reputation for oddball rhymes spit out at alarming speeds, and for his almost over-eager participation in quirky collaborations, and the brand new Computer Cooties is a fairly decent example of his rampant, over-the-top braggadocio and weirdo, albeit endearing, endeavors. This remix collection features some serious collab production skills of like-minded friends (Daedelus, Free The Robots, Flying Lotus, and others), as well as a few more familiar beats (ala Wolf Parade, Holy Fuck, and others), and it's all meant to celebrate the brand new Busdriver web page, so be very sure to check it out.

Small Black

Small Black - Search Party
Small Black - Photojournalist

Bedroom-esque and gauzy, slightly lo-fi and subtly textured with all sorts of goodness, the upcoming Small Black full-length, New Chain, is a sleepy lil' disc that defies definition, yet remains immediately accessible/enjoyable at the same time. The accompanying one-sheet touts the album as a "delirious smudging of the lines between melancholy and nostalgia, tension and celebration, unabashed pop music and experimentation," and that sounds pretty good to us, considering it's more eloquent and fitting a description than anything else we'd probably come up with.

New Chain will be released on October 26th, courtesy of Jagjaguwar

He's My Brother, She's My Sister

He's My Brother She's My Sister - How'm I Gonna Get Back Home
He's My Brother She's My Sister - Coattails

Silly little tunes like these make my day! He's My Brother, She's My Sister have been on the Film Festival circuit; playing Sundance, Manimal Vinyl, Karlovy Vary International and a few others, and the cellist is one of the ex's in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, odd! Anyways, these jigs feel completely appropriate considering we, A.) Rarely know how we're getting home, B.) Are complete suckers for sexy front women, and C.) Simply bust over alleyway rhythms and drunk dancing!

The He's My Brother, She's My Sister EP is available via Bandcamp

Black Heart Procession

Black Heart Procession - Blank Page

Black Heart Procession and their noir ballads of lust/distrust and existential doubt never fail to completely impress the hell outta us (and we're especially impressed with the experimental elements - ala the band's last release, Six - amidst the patented, seductive darkness and ominous piano and brooding atmospherics, plus the very healthy dose of eclectic remixed tracks, courtesy of Lee "Scratch" Perry, Eluvium, and others…), and in case you had any doubts, Blood Bunny / Black Rabbit is no exception.

Blood Bunny / Black Rabbit will be released on October 12th, courtesy of Temporary Residence Ltd.

Lorn - None An Island (Radio Edit)

Look, None An Island contains more of those dark, apocalyptic-skewed beats and menacing-esque aesthetics found in past Lorn releases, but really - other than that, what would you expect us to say that we haven't said before? If you've been paying attention, then you can probably fill in those blanks easy enough, but if not, then go ahead and take a gander over HERE and HERE, and try a little harder to keep up next time.

Dark Dark Horse

We discovered the gorgeous, minimalist electronic pop of Dark Dark Horse while snooping around on the internet one afternoon and as difficult as it was for us to finally find 'em, we're really glad that we did. We really don't know too much about the band, aside from the random info on their web page, but what we do know is that their music is pretty goddamned beautiful and easy to drink (or fuck) to, and we're already eagerly awaiting more of it.

Yeasayer & Washed Out: Tonight!

Man, we've all been waiting several months for this one, and it should be a no-brainer, but yeah - just in case you might not have heard, critically acclaimed, experimental dance pop/psych rock extraordinaires Yeasayer (check out their already-classic Paris Metro Take Away Show performance HERE, if you're so inclined) is performing tonight with the equally impressive Washed Out at the State Theatre in St. Petersburg, and we're highly encouraging/recommending pretty much everyone in the Tampa Bay area to get their asses up and out to the show. We've been told that tickets are still available at the door (though we're not sure how long that will last) so there's no fucking excuse to miss out.

Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus - Camera Day

Hot off the heels of (and only a few months since) the release of the magnificent and absurdly weirdo-rific Cosmogramma full-length, Flying Lotus decided to grace the world with yet another 7 tracks of glitch-riddled, 8-bit-inspired, abstract goodness, ie: the Pattern+Grid World EP. This kind of impromptu, semi-surprise release always gets our hearts a-flutterin', especially when we know it'll be kinda mind-blowing and completely bewildering to the average civilian that might wander in expecting the same overplayed nonsense they can pretty much hear everywhere else they go.

Pattern+Grid World is available courtesy of Warp

Holy Sons

Holy Sons - Payoff
Holy Sons - Look Of Pain!

The aching/cursed tunes on Holy Sons' (aka solo project of Om/Grails drummer Emil Amos) Survivalist Tales are extremely daunting and autumnal. This album, combined with the slight change in weather, has gotten me opening up the windows and dousing my spirits with, um, even more spirits!

Survivalist Tales will be released on October 12th, via Partisan Records

Games - Planet Party
Games - Shadows In Bloom

This Brooklyn duo made up of Joel Ford from Tigercity, and Daniel Lopatin - the mastermind behind Oneohtrix Point Never - have cranked out a 4 song EP with two remix jams for their upcoming debut, That We Can Play. "Games is glitch music inspired by 70’s tape cutup master Teo Macero. They are obsessed with 80’s MIDIfunk innovators such as The System and Marcus Miller as much as ubiquitous Italo disco jams and heat damaged DJ Premier mixtapes."

That We Can Play will be released on November 2nd, via Hippos In Tanks
