Charles Bradley

Charles Bradley - The World (Is Going Up In Flames)
Charles Bradley - Lovin You, Baby

Dunham Records - an imprint of Daptone Records - are quickly becoming the modern-day version of Stax, and their upcoming release with vocal powerhouse Charles Bradley would fit right in next to any Soul Classic of the past. An all-star cast of musicians from the Menahan Street Band, Dap-Kings, The Budos Band, Antibalas, El Michels Affair, and Lee Fields and the Expressions back Bradley throughout the entirety of Dreaming.... His gospel-ish belts and irresistible musical spirit are inspiring, while the bone crunching beats and organ-fueled groove have gotten me extremely excited to get 2011 underway.

No Time For Dreaming will be released on January 25th, via Dunham Records

OFF! - Darkness
OFF! - Panic Attack
OFF! - Full of Shit

The legacy of the west-coast punk scene completely engulfs this band. Singer Keith Morris was a founding member and original vocalist for Black Flag, and later left to form the Circle Jerks. The heritage doesn't stop there; Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), and Mario Rubalcaba (Earthless/Hot Snakes/Rocket From the Crypt) flesh out the rest of this uniquely rich musical foursome.

First Four EPs will be released on December 12th, via Vice Records

Gangrene - Boss Shit
Gangrene - Take Drugs

Joining creative forces under the Gangrene moniker, the collaborative, somewhat dream-team-esque pairing of Stones Throw alum/artist Oh No and producer The Alchemist unite to create a nifty, albeit rightfully strange, lil' concept album. Gutter Water is rife with textured layers of dusty, crackling crate samples, ghostly AM radio voice-overs, and guest spots from a slew of like-minded affiliates (such as Raekwon, Guilty Simpson, MED, Evidence, and more), not to mention the semi-obscure, yet infectious, series of hazy beats set down by both partners in crime. Common themes swirling throughout the disc include violence, disease, decay, and gratuitous drug use, natch.

Girl Talk

Girl Talk - Oh No
Girl Talk - Triple Double

Do musical genres actually mean anything anymore? Who cares. Melding otherwise groan-worthy "classic" rock tunes (I mean, unless you're a complete douche, how often do you really want to hear an unadulterated Journey song at a club?*), with '80s pop faves, modern day radio-ready hip hop tracks, and everything (everything) else in between, Girl Talk's newest release, All Day is a banger of a mashup mixtape (best listened to as a whole, and it kinda pains us to carve out only a few lil' bits and pieces for preview purposes) that's one long, nostalgic listen, from start to finish.

* Note: All Day does not actually contain a Journey sample. Thank god.

All Day is available in its entirety as a FREE download, courtesy of Illegal Art.

Robot Koch

Robot Koch - Water and Solutions
Robot Koch - Haunted Landscapes (ft. 1000 Names)

Berlin-based producer Robot Koch released the diverse, glitch-riddled Songs For Trees and Cyborgs full-length back in October, and for real - it's chock full of thumpin' dubstep-influenced tracks, delicious hip hop beats, and overall eclectic, electronic goodness. We've been pumping it out, fairly regular-like (at least at the last few Liquid Jesus ventures), and now that we've actually got a little bit of time to spare, we're giving it a lil' bit of love here on the blog as well. Sound good? Good.

Bikini - A Cheerleader
Bikini - American Mourning

Sugary NYC duo Bikini have put together a dancy 6-song EP that'll keep your blood pumpin' all throughout these cold winter nights. Synths, electro/808 goodness, and handfuls of sensual quirks that conjure up ballistic nights make this an ipod-shuffler giant!

The RIP JDS EP will be released on November 23rd, via Lefse Records

Ox Scapula

Ox Scapula - Taking Liberties
Ox Scapula - D.T.

For anyone who might actually appreciate these silly little write-ups (that I'm sure no one reads anyways), this is thundering math rock that's delightfully similar to the post-punk/angular indie-rock-whatever sound heyday of the early/mid-nineties DC/Dischord scene. It's perfect for piquing ex-hardcore-kid interests/sensibilities and stoking post-post-teenage angst (whatever that's called), and perpetuating an already really bad mood, but in a really, really good way, of course.

The War On Drugs

The War On Drugs - Baby Missiles

Although it might not seem like it at first, Future Weather is technically an EP, since most of it is semi-bookended by a handful of wandering, wispy, twisting textures of obscure noise tracks... Still, that doesn't stop this disc from packing enough heart and soul and sound into its remaining five "proper" songs, ok? Jangly guitars and a droning organ, a set of sometimes eerily Dylan-esque vocal stylings and a bit of harmonica thrown in the mix - just to liven things up (I mean, who in their right mind can resist a lil' bit of harmonica every now and then, huh?) - the part classic Americana, part experimental folk-pop sounds of The War On Drugs are an infectious listen indeed.

Lazerbeak - Dream Team
Lazerbeak - Salt And Sea

Doomtree producer and collaborator (and member of The Plastic Constellations) Lazerbeak introduced Legend Recognize Legend back at the end of September, but by no means is that gonna keep us from giving it a lil' bit of love here on Liquid Jesus. Straddling genres between the epic apocalyptic rock of The Plastic Constellations and his hip hop beat producer instincts, the result is a debut solo album brimming with lush, intricate beats and multi-instrumentalist-inspired melodies. Yes, it's strange and sometimes seemingly quirky, but it's also oh-so catchy and intriguing at the same time.

Free Moral Agents

Free Moral Agents - Six Degrees
Free Moral Agents - Systole

At one point Free Moral Agents was just the quirky side project of Isaiah "Ikey" Owens (keyboardist for the Mars Volta), but these days the Long Beach quintet has polished up a slick new album, Control This, and it feels a lot like something that might've been released in '93, and could easily fit on a cassette mixtape right next to Portishead, My Bloody Valentine, and His Name Is Alive.

Maserati - We Got The System To Fight The System
Maserati - Oaxaca

Part explosive, shape-shifting experiment in sound and part bittersweet, in memorandum tribute album, (dedicated to the memory of the band's late friend and drummer Jerry Fuchs) - Pyramid Of The Sun is exploratory instrumental outfit Maserati's grand opus, and it's one that's steeped in tragedy, countless directional shifts, and endless, effortless momentum - both literally and figuratively.

Pyramid Of The Sun will be released on November 9th, via Temporary Residence

Aeroplane - We Can't Fly
Aeroplane - Fish In The Sky
Aeroplane - London Bridge

European party duo Aeroplane had a bunch of buzz comin' off this year's edition of Coachella. Now the tandem act has seemingly become the solo project of lone-wolf Vito De Luca and is set to release its debut later on this month. Overly-produced, blatantly '80s-centric, bare instrumentals, and at times quite bizarre with the lyrics... yet, I've been rockin' it over and over again... 'cause somewhere in there, the soulful hope, party vibe, slickness is sticking to my lil' slab of guilty-pleasure ribs.

We Can't Fly will be released on November 30th, via Eskimo Recordings
