New Year's Eve w/ Poetry N Lotion: Tonight!

Tonight! Swing by the world (in)famous Crowbar in Ybor City for a seriously quirky, fun-as-fuck way to ring in 2012. For reals - what better way to escape the dreadful amateur-hour festivities everywhere else, than to hang with the PnL boys while they perform Devo's decidedly oddball masterpiece, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, from front to back. A few of us from the Liquid Jesus crew will be playing music all night long, so come on out and prepare yourself for some surprise (ie: sloppy) midnight kisses.

Blu & Exile

Blu & Exile - The Only One
Blu & Exile - Everybody Nose (ft. Johaz & Fashawn)

Following up on their acclaimed Below The Heavens full length, collaborative MC/producer duo Blu & Exile dropped the previously unreleased Give Me My Flowers While I Can Smell Them a week or so ago, reintroducing the world to more of their dope, quirky/catchy/creative sample/rhyme combos, and thrilling the fuck outta hip hop and beat enthusiasts everywhere, I'm sure.

Give Me My Flowers While I Can Smell Them is available HERE

Brasstronaut - Opportunity

Um, swoon! Look, we absolutely adore Brasstronaut and fell hard for the brilliant/beautiful Mt. Chimaera masterpiece full-length when it was released a couple years ago. Since then, we've been waiting with bated breath for another offering from this eclectic, difficult-to-describe jazz-influenced sextet - so when the Opportunity EP finally appeared we almost didn't know what to do with ourselves. For real. Think gorgeous, highly infectious, diverse and spacey orchestral-quality arrangements created with lotsa horns, percussion, and upright bass.

The Weeknd

The Weeknd - Montreal
The Weeknd - Same Old Song

The highly anticipated, third and final installment of The Weeknd's baby-makin' mixtape trilogy (see HERE and HERE to catch up on just how much we slobbered over the first two), Echoes Of Silence features more of the acclaimed Toronto-based R&B wizard's signature, soulful sound. Get dirty.

Top Girls

Top Girls - Rayanne
Top Girls - Urban Legend

In the past we've put some serious thought into the possibility of making facial hair mandatory among all the dudes in the Liquid Jesus circle, but we don't need to worry about that any longer - especially now that DarrellDarrell's sprouted a sexy 'stache to match his dirty, dirty demeanor. The new We Will Rise EP by swanky, soulful NC act Top Girls seems like appropriate soundtrack to mark the occasion, with its silky-smooth, drug-induced after-party style fog and surprisingly delicious low-end and heavy beats tossed in for good measure.

Flosstradamus - From The Back (ft. Danny Brown)

"Jubilation is the name of a long gone nightclub in the south suburbs outside Chicago that gave teenage partygoers their first taste of the ’90s ghetto house tracks that would soon morph into juke and footwork. So its more than appropriate that Flosstradamus take that title for their brand new EP, where the Chitown DJ duo of J2K (Josh Young) and Autobot (Curt Cameruci) use the hyperactive drums and booming sub bass sonics of juke as a jumping off point for new school dancefloor sounds of their very own."

Coliseum - Waiting (Too Late)
Coliseum - The Fiery Eye

With seven (mostly) active members on our lil' Liquid Jesus team (plus a handful of in-the-know affiliates and buddies), I think it's safe to say that we've got a fairly diverse collective taste in music... I mean, jeez - have you wandered your way through any of our PLAYLISTS lately? Coliseum and their new, mostly J. Robbins-produced Parasites EP is one of those searing, anti-anthemic, no-holds-barred releases that let us get back to our punk roots for a bit - to which I, for one, am always whole-heartedly willing.

Skull Tape

Skull Tape - Fable Of The Bees
Skull Tape - Trans Anthro

Seeing as how it was released early in the year, and with relatively little recognition, it seems that The Invisible Hand And The Descent Of Man full-length has slipped under the radar for, I think, pretty much everyone… which is a shame, since Skull Tape is a slightly altered reincarnation of the inimitable Mae Shi - and that warrants a real big holy shit! from us, obviously. This thing is energetic as hell and cheerful to a fault, with lotsa anthemic sing-along tracks (plenty of "whoa-ohs" and "ooh-ahs" spread throughout), but be warned - there are also some surprisingly dark, devilish lyrics/themes swirling amongst the sugary-sweet pop hooks and dance beats. Which is right up our alley, of course.

CYNE - Enter Killmore
CYNE - An Introspection

Only six tracks from G-ville cyber hip hop outfit CYNE on this brand new lil' release, but don't let that number fool you into thinking that the beat-erific Wasteland Volume One is some kind of quickie EP... 'Cause this album (technically a mixtape) is actually a lengthy collection of tunes - chock full of eclectic, turn-on-a-dime style song snippets, and bookended by some dope sci-fi rhymeage + bouncy beats.

The Marshmallow Ghosts

The Marshmallow Ghosts - The Hearse Song
The Marshmallow Ghosts - Wait For The Day

Our main man Andrew from the Bricks turned us all on to the Marshmallow Ghosts a week or so ago, out of a mutual appreciation (obsession) of anything Graveface or BMSR-related, and we gotta say it - the whimsical, infectious, kinda creepy goodness on the self-titled Marshmallow Ghosts full-length (and accompanying Corpse Reviver No. 2 music video) hits all of the right spots, natch.

Headless Horseman

Headless Horseman - Wavlngth
Headless Horseman - 1CHRD (Blackbird Blackbird remix)

The breezy/whimsical Headless Horseman duo does us all a solid by taking their singles and one-offs and remixes (which were previously just floating around, all willy-nilly like on the internet) and compiling everything into an easy-to-digest, honest-to-god, real collection of tracks - so while HDLSS isn't quite a proper album, so to speak, we think this one-stop-shop style makes it a lil' easier to get a grasp on all the poppy goodness found within.

Eccentric Soul: The Nickel & Penny Labels

Voices - Fall In Love Again
South Shore Commission - You Got Me Hummin'
Little Ben & the Cheers - I'm Gonna Get Even With You

It's a comp based around Richard Pegue, a 40-year career disc-jockey with a legendary knowledge of soul, who helmed the Nickel & Penny record labels of Chicago. Numero uncovered a huge trove of long-unheard sides amongst the 25,000 records in Pegue’s basement, which paved the way for this compilation.

Hellfyre Club Presents: Veneris Nigrum

KAIL - Archimedes
Nocando - Hollywood

Hellfyre Club released the dope Veneris Nigrum compilation as a free download last week in response to, and as a subtle, kinda smirky "fuck off" towards the consumerism culture of Black Friday... hence the name, duh. This thing features a sampling of the imprint's current roster (think Nocando, KAIL, Open Mike Eagle, Subtitle, and more) and rattles the fuck outta my windows when the volume's cranked up loud. No purchase necessary.

Veneris Nigrum is available in its entirety as a FREE download, courtesy of Hellfyre Club. Click HERE to get it.

Suuns - Red Song

I opened up at the Bricks last night with the b-side to this lil' EP and truth be told - it didn't go over very well, to say the least, with all the out of towner skate peeps (who, predictably, I guess, don't seem to share my enthusiasm for the hypnotic, throbbing drone of low end coupled with weirdo, minimal instrumental effects and haunting vocals). Who'd have thunk it? Seems that some people still need a lesson or two in "things don't need to make sense all the time."

The Black Keys

Finally. Blues rock maestros The Black Keys return with El Camino, the highly, highly anticipated (at least around these parts) follow-up to the Liquid Jesus top fave album, Brothers, and this motherfucker boasts a whole hell of a lotta more hand-clappin', foot-tappin', booty-shakin', shit-kickin', cocksure rock 'n' roll, and I can't help but shake my moneymaker (and shake it hard) during every single listen. Goddamn.

El Camino will be released on December 6th, courtesy of Nonesuch
