65daysofstatic

65daysofstatic - Dance Dance Dance | Piano Fights

Made up of a handful of alt versions of tracks from We Were Exploding Anyway and the soundtrack-esque Silent Running opus, The Coach Road Session EP is another short-but-sweet sampling of sprawling instrumental goodness by this eclectic post-rock quartet.

Blue Sky Black Death & Deniro Farrar

BSBD & Deniro Farrar - Can't Take It With Me When I Die

More atmospheric collab goodness from beat-maker duo Blue Sky Black Death and Deniro Farrar on this one. The aptly named Cliff Of Death EP, which delves into the dark with swirling themes of death and despair (and eventually, acceptance), and was released back on the supposed apocalyptic due-date of December 21st, just for good measure. End of the world, my ass.

42Ghosts

42Ghosts - Lord Of The Game (Death Grips)
42Ghosts - I Want It I Need It (Death Grips)

This one is really interesting, wherein the mysterious producer project known as 42Ghosts reinterprets/repackages the ├╝ber aggro, balls-to-the-wall Death Grips Exmilitary long player mixtape thing in its entirety, transforming the often head-scratchingly furious noise of the original into something bouncy and upbeat and, dare I say it, much more palatable. Nice job, guys!

Big Boi

Big Boi - Mama Told Me (ft. Kelly Rowland)
Big Boi - Lines (ft. A$AP Rocky & Phantogram)

Been trying to explain to everyone just how odd-ball this new Big Boi album is, 'cause man, it's a pretty wild ride from beginning to end. For reals. Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors is a bit of an adventurous departure from Sir Lucious Left Foot, and its eclectic mix of multi-directional weirdo sing-alongs, bangers, and ballads are gonna bewilder the shit outta quite a few unexpecting peeps upon first listen. Featuring no fewer than three appearances, each, by both synth sweetheart duo Phantogram and the sexy soul powerhouse Little Dragon, PLUS! additional collabs with lo-fi surf rock aficionado Wavves, and T.I., Ludacris, Kid Cudi, Killer Mike, A$AP Rocky, Scar, Theophilus London, and more. Say what?!

Memory Tapes

Memory Tapes - Neighborhood Watch

Grace/Confusion is more of a dense and diverse listen than Player Piano, the previous Memory Tapes release, with its six proper tracks sprawling out into switch-a-roo styled, multi-directional cinematic-esque score of sorts, more like individual chapters of a much larger story than separate stand-alone songs. Or something like that.

Unnatural Helpers

Unnatural Helpers - Medication
Unnatural Helpers - Hate Your Teachers

Gosh, I just love the don't-give-a-fuck yet surprisingly polished and put-together sound on Land Grab, the newish full length by Seattle punker quartet Unnatural Helpers... Mostly 'cause it's all sloppy and rambunctious (but the good kind of sloppy and rambunctious) and angsty and frenzied and fun as hell to listen to when yer getting good and drunk. But also because it's a lot of fun to get good and drunk, ya know?

Rhye

Rhye - The Fall

We're completely smitten, it's true. But it's pretty damned easy to fall for the baby-making music of mysterious-yet-still-seductive-as-all-get-out duo Rhye, I guess, and it's a well-known fact* that at least one of the Liquid Jesus affiliates made an actual baby whilst listening to the sexy and soulful sounds of their last single. So there's that.

* not an actual fact, although quite probable, nonetheless
