Why?
Why? - Jonathan's Hope
Why? - White English
Let's go ahead and give Yoni Wolf and his weirdo Why? project a lil' bit more love on this one - if not for the highly anticipated and upcoming live performance here in town (all pandering-to-the-locals-like) - then definitely for this quirky new full-length full of more nerdy vocal acrobatics and staggering hip-pop-esque beats with uncomfortable-yet-alluring time-signature changes and twinkling percussion and plunking piano goodness.
* For the locals: Why? will be performing on Saturday, October 28th at Crowbar in Ybor City
Mumps, Etc. will be released on October 9th, via Anticon.

Ringo Deathstarr

LINKS REMOVED
We've fawned over the Ringo Deathstarr crew and their My Bloody Valentine-influenced, shoe-gazey chord progressions/atmospheric goodness before in the past, and with Mauve - the follow-up to last year's Colour Trip full length - the Austin-based trio continues to craft their relentless barrage of solid, reverb-laden tracks and catchy, albeit somewhat visceral, anthems of noise. Let further fawning commence.

The Soft Pack

The Soft Pack - Saratoga
The Soft Pack - Tallboy
Lo-fi, breezy indie tunes on this sophomore full-length by SoCal quartet The Soft Pack, with a good amount of tasty bluesy bits and garage rock jangles to keep it interesting, ya know? Don't pigeonhole this one, though. Strapped also features a hazy daze of synth fuzz and organ chords, upbeat basslines and guitar feedback, plus saxophones, guys. Saxophones.

Caspian

Caspian - Porcellous
We know a handful of bearded instrumental-rock aficionados who are gonna poop their pants over Waking Season. For real... If the delightfully building/booming/crashing-down-all-around-you vein of post-rock (ala like-minded maestros Mogwai and EITS) hits your sweet-spot, then the lengthy introductions of swirling melodies, creeping percussion, and methodical/hypnotic guitar work - building up into an expansive cratering blast of majestic chords and chaos, of course - on Caspian's new full length is gonna get you a lil' chubby in the pants, for sure.
Waking Season will be released on September 25th, courtesy of Triple Crown Records

The Gaslamp Killer

The Gaslamp Killer - Dead Vets (ft. Adrian Younge & MRR)
The Gaslamp Killer - 7 Years Of Bad Luck For Fun (ft. Dimlite)
Look at this. The Gaslamp Killer's brand new Breakthrough full-length features a nice lil' crew of accomplices (including Gonjasufi, Mophono, Computer Jay, Samiyam, Shigeto, and more). Plus! The obligatory (don't say we didn't warn you once or twice) doped-up sci-fi-flick soundtrack-style of devastatingly creep-o-riffic arrangements you might've come to expect from this dude, and enough bleeps/bloops, eclectic twists/turns, and dirty-dirty psychedelic murk to satisfy beat enthusiasts like, everywhere, man.

Cult Of Youth

Cult Of Youth - Man And Man's Ruin
Cult Of Youth - Golden Age
The Brooklyn-born Cult Of Youth project (aka song-writer/multi-instrumentalist Sean Ragon) returns with a refreshing and intricately delivered savvy/sexy percussion-vs-strings approach to the anthemic and avant-garde folk-pop sound on the new Love Will Prevail long-player. Think churning, acoustic-guitar-driven drinking songs steeped in galloping, whiskey-drenched, Pogues-esque/pub-rock nostalgia.
* For the locals: Cult Of Youth will be performing on Thursday, November 8th at New World Brewery in Ybor City
Love Will Prevail is available courtesy of Sacred Bones

Lymbyc Systym

Lymbyc Systym - Prairie School
Lymbyc Systym - Falling Together
Been thoroughly enjoying the new Lymbyc Systym joint the past couple of days, and with all of the meandering orchestral maneuvers and soaring electro-chord progressions and sci-fi-esque goodness, like, everywhere on this thing, I'm fairly sure that fans of ambient-oriented, synthtrumental pop acts - think Tycho, Maserati, Tristeza (dunno - maybe I'm a bit off on these comparisons, but you get the point, right?) - are gonna fall head over heels for it as well.
Symbolyst will be released on September 18th, via Lymbyc Systym and Western Vinyl

Hundred Waters

Hundred Waters - Thistle (TOKiMONSTA remix)
It's almost as if those crafty Gainesville lovelies in Hundred Waters discussed this Thistle EP/single thing amongst themselves, and said, "Fuck it. Let's recruit an eclectic crew of beat-wizard friends to remix/reinterpret our already delicious lil' tune here, ok? That'll get those Liquid Jesus peeps all aroused and hot and bothered. AGAIN." Um, TOKiMONSTA? Star Slinger? Fucking AraabMuzik!? You must've read our minds, guys.

Paper Tiger

Paper Tiger - Greatest Of All Fridays
Here's a nifty lil' EP by Doomtree-affiliated producer Paper Tiger, entitled Summer - and even though we've already put Labor Day behind us, we'd still like to give this one a big thumbs up, ok? Whether it's summertime or not, we think the über feel-good beats, eclectic production, and overall shimmery/summery (duh) vibes on this one are pretty appropriate, no matter what season it is.

JJ DOOM

JJ DOOM - Bite The Thong
JJ DOOM - Rhymin' Slang
DOOM, the masked and marble-mouthed marauder antihero expands on his already prolific discography and teams up with producer, instrumentalist, and fellow hip-hopper Jneiro Jarel to form the JJ DOOM powerhouse experiment thing or whatever. Expect a lotta quirky beat twists/turns, obscure B-movie samples, and staticky soundbites on the brand new Key To The Kuffs, plus lotsa talk about drugs and sex, and other weirdo verbal miscellany, natch.

Dinosaur Jr.

Dinosaur Jr. - Don't Pretend You Didn't Know
Dinosaur Jr. - Watch The Corners
I know these fellas have been around longer than a buncha you lil' kiddos, but we're actually old enough to have been fans well before the 2005 reunion, so new Dinosaur Jr. records always give us the sweet lil' nostalgic tingles, ya know? Hey old folks! There's a shit ton of infectious pop hooks, wailing guitar riffage, delightfully awkward-ish yet soothing and smooth-as-butter vocals, and gorgeous, reverby musical accoutrements strewn throughout I Bet On Sky, and it's exactly what you'd expect from J. Mascis & co. So there.
I Bet On Sky will be released on September 18th, via Jagjaguwar

Tucked away this weekend, all post-RNC-nonsense/pre-Labor Day blow-out-style, the 8th edition of this multi-venue summertime classic is gonna showcase - per usual - an eclectic medley of talented local bands and anything goes out-of-towners, ie: David Dondero, The Owsley Bros, Bleubird, Rec Center, Chasing Kings, Easter Island, and a whole bunch more (cough, thee Liquid Jesus, cough). Get excited, y'all, 'cause this one's gonna be fun. Peep the official, print-outable schedule for both venues HERE, or check out the comprehensive-as-fuck digital guide that our good lil' buddies over at Suburban Apologist put together (HERE).
Highly recommended, duh, so don't miss out.
